         Census Bureau Releases Census  2000 Population
               Counts for the U.S. Virgin Islands
                                

  The U.S. Census Bureau today released the official Census 2000
population count of 108,612 for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  As part of Census 2000, the Census Bureau worked with the U.S. Virgin
Islands government to collect detailed population and housing data. The
count was provided to Virgin Islands Gov. Charles Wesley Turnbull.
  
  The U.S. Virgin Islands population increased by 6,803 over the previous
census in 1990. This represented a seven percent increase in 10 years.
  
  The Census Bureau will provide more detailed data for the U.S. Virgin
Islands in a demographic profile scheduled for release later this year and
in a separate summary file and printed report, scheduled for release in
February 2002 and November 2002, respectively.
                                
  The following table shows the final census counts for small geographic
areas in the U.S. Virgin Islands:
