           Census Bureau to Announce Decision on Whether
              To Adjust Census 2000 Population Counts


What:   The Commerce Department's Census Bureau will hold a news  
        conference to announce the decision on whether to adjust Census 
        2000 population data. Census Bureau Acting Director William 
        Barron's decision will be based on the Executive Steering 
        Committee for Accuracy and Coverage Evaluation Policy's (ESCAP) 
        detailed report and recommendation.

Who:    William Barron, Census Bureau acting director; and 
        John H. Thompson, principal associate director for programs.

When:   Wednesday, Oct. 17; 11 a.m. EDT
