   Census Bureau Director to Update Media on Census 2000 Operations
                                
   Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prewitt will brief the news media on
Census 2000 operations at 12:00 noon, EST, Wednesday, Feb. 2, at a local
census office in Washington, D.C.

   Topics will include the status of the census address list, which will
be used for delivery of nearly 120 million questionnaires in March and
the recruitment of about half a million temporary census workers to follow
up with as many as 46 million nonresponding housing units.

   Prewitt also will provide updates on the status of enumeration in
remote Alaska, the promotional "Census 2000 Road Tour," which begins in
mid-February and the campaign to raise the response rate by 5 percentage
points over the 1990 census.

   A live webcast of the briefing will be carried on the Census Bureau's
Web site http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/webcast2_2event.html.
