Census Bureau Releases Report on Homeowners' Costs
The U.S. Census Bureau today released a report on the housing costs of homeowners as reported by the owner-occupants of nearly 70 million housing units in Census 2000, about two- thirds of the occupied housing units in the United States.
The report, Housing Costs of Homeowners: 2000 [PDF], examines mortgage status, selected monthly owner costs and the share of household income these costs represented in 1999. The data show variations by regions, states and large cities. Information is shown for homeowners by age, race and Hispanic origin. Housing characteristics include the year the structure was built.
Selected monthly owner costs covered in the report consist of mortgages and home equity loans, taxes, insurance, utilities, fuels and, where applicable, condominium fees.
The tabulations in the report are based on the sample of households that received the census long form, about 1-in-6 nationally.
