Census Bureau Releases 1999 Population Estimates for
                    Puerto Rico's Municipios

The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released population
estimates as of July 1, 1999, for Puerto Rico's 78 municipios,
including percentage changes and number of births and deaths for each
municipio from 1990 to 1999.

The municipio of Juncos (43,591) posted the largest percentage change
between 1990 and 1999, about 42 percent, followed by Canovanas (51,925)
and Cidra (50,019), about 41 percent each, and Toa Alta (61,579), about
40 percent. San Juan, the island's largest municipio (439,602), grew
0.4 percent between 1990 and 1999.

These estimates are consistent with the 1999 population estimate for the
entire commonwealth released by the Census Bureau in December 1999. Puerto
Rico's population then was estimated at 3.9 million, an increase of
10.4 percent since 1990.
