Case Studies

EPA and many non-governmental organizations, trade groups, and companies collect and share information on techniques and tools for improving a facility's land use and habitat preservation practices. The Performance Track program encourages applicants and members to report on land and habitat improvements in the indicators listed below. Examples of appropriate measures are also provided.

General Resources

The Land Research Program in EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) provides innovative science solutions to preserve the nation's land, restore contaminated properties, and protect public health from exposure to environmental contaminants.

The Wildlife Habitat Council's Corporate Habitat Certification/International Accreditation Program Exit disclaimer recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs at individual sites. WHC certification adds value to programs by providing third-party credibility and an objective evaluation of projects.

Green Biz Leaders Exit disclaimer gives examples of how companies of all sizes and sectors align environmental responsibility with business success, as judged by independent agencies and organizations. Search under preservation/restoration for examples of companies undertaking land conservation.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program Exit disclaimer offers technical and financial assistance to private (non-federal) landowners to voluntarily restore wetlands and other fish and wildlife habitats on their land.

Community Land Revitalization

EPA's Land Revitalization Initiative seeks to resolve barriers to reuse and promote the reuse of sites that are being or have been cleaned up. A major objective of the revitalization initiative is to instill at EPA a culture of reuse of our precious resources. To this end, EPA is working to ensure that cleanup remedies take into account a property's anticipated future use.

EPA's Land Revitalization Action Agenda aims to protect human health and the environment by cleaning up waste sites and restore land to productive commercial, residential, industrial, and green space end uses.

EPA’s Land Research Program conducts Brownfields and Land Revitalization Research. Among the resources on this site is a link to a web-based decision support system for developing and evaluating future reuse scenarios for potentially contaminated land, called Smarte Exit disclaimer.
