Schizophrenia: Andre Tapp, MD

Andre Tapp, M.D.  

Dr. Tapp completed his medical degree at the Free University in Belgium in 1977, and after a residency in internal medicine at the same University, he did his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor . Early in his career, Dr. Tapp served as Chief of Psychiatry at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek Michigan and as an Assistant Professor in psychiatry at Michigan State University .  In 1994, Dr. Tapp joined the leadership of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.  Since 1996, Dr. Tapp has served as the Associate Executive Director of Mental Health Services at the VA PSHCS.  In addition, he has also directed the Model Schizophrenia Program, Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the VA PSHCS, American Lake Division since 1997.  As the Director of the MIRECC Model Schizophrenia Program, Dr. Tapp has been the principal investigator of over twenty research studies involving severe mental illness, with particular focus on the clinical treatment and neuropsychology of schizophrenia.  Dr. Tapp has also authored over thirty publications, including recent articles on depression in schizophrenia, combination antipsychotic therapy for treatment refractory patients, and cognitive and functional outcomes in schizophrenia.  In addition, he is a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington where he has been a member of the academic staff since 1994.   Dr. Tapp is currently an American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Fellow and President Emeritus of the Washington State Psychiatric Association.
