Decennial Census

A Half-Century of Learning: Historical Statistics on Educational Attainment in the United States: 1940 to 2000 — In 1940, statistics on educational attainment were collected for every person enumerated in the census and from a sample of them thereafter. In 1940, only 25 percent of the population age 25 and older had a high school diploma, and just 5 percent earned a bachelor’s degree or more. By the close of the 20th century, these figures had increased to 80 percent with high school diplomas and 24 percent with bachelor’s degrees. Educational attainment data are shown by sex, race and Hispanic origin (since 1980) at the regional and state levels. These data are based on the decennial census and are separate from annual data collected in the Current Population Survey. (Scheduled for release April 6.)

Demographic Surveys

2005 American Housing Survey National Public Use Microdata File — First statistics from this survey enable users to generate their own tabulations on a wide range of housing topics, e.g., housing costs, satisfaction with neighborhood and the frequency of repairs made. The file consists of records of individual responses to the survey, with identifying information removed. (Tentatively scheduled for release late-April.)

Americans with Disabilities: 2002 — National-level data on people who have difficulty performing specific activities of daily living, such as seeing, hearing and preparing meals, and have certain conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease or mental retardation. Includes statistics on various demographic characteristics (e.g., age, perceived health status, health insurance coverage and computer usage). (Tentatively scheduled for release late-April.)

Estimates and Projections

Domestic Net Migration in the United States: 2000 to 2004 — This report describes recent patterns of population redistribution within the country. Analysis focuses on net migration for different geographic areas, including regions, divisions, states, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas and counties. The report focuses on the post-Census 2000 period but also includes data from 1990 to 1999. (Tentatively scheduled for release early-April.)

2002 Economic Census

Survey of Business Owners: Black-Owned Firms: 2002 — Report on the state of black-owned businesses from a survey conducted every five years, with data on the numbers of such businesses; statistics shown separately for those with and without paid employees. Also, includes data on sales and receipts for the nation, states and local area levels where black-owned businesses are concentrated. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-April.)

2002 Economic Census: Subject Series — Fifty-five reports for several industry sectors — all at the national level — are now being issued on a flow basis. These reports include information such as product shipments by contributing industries. All 883 geographic area series reports and 651 industry reports have been published. Economic Surveys

2004 Annual Survey of Local Government Finances - School Systems — The report contains data on revenues, expenditures, debt and financial assets for public elementary and secondary school systems on the state and local level. The report includes state rankings of revenues and expenditures per pupil. (Scheduled for release April 3.)

Facts for Features

Cinco de Mayo — “The 5th of May” is one of our nation’s most popular Latino celebrations, paying tribute to Mexico’s cultural heritage. The Census Bureau joins in the festivities with a collection of data relating to U.S. residents of Mexican descent. (Tentatively scheduled for release late-April.)

Father’s Day (June 18) — The Census Bureau honors “dear old dad” with a collection of statistical information from its demographic and economic subject areas pertaining to Father’s Day. (Tentatively scheduled for release late-April.)

Company Selected For $600 Million Contract — 3/30/06 — The U.S. Census Bureau selected Harris Corporation for a five-year contract approaching $600 million to support the Field Data Collection Automation Project. This project involves the use of mobile computers that will enable field representatives to collect data and ultimately increase efficiency and reduce costs for the 2010 Census.
