Description:

The current metal adhesive bonding process consists of several steps that generate many hazardous wastes. Metal surface pretreatment by anodization or chemical etching produces large amounts of wastewater that contain chromium, and the priming step uses primer that contains solvents and chromates. This proposed research will demonstrate the feasibility of formation of an environmentally benign nonsurface pretreatment water-based primer for adhesive bonding. The effective nonchromate inhibitors for the water- based primers will be identified, and a family of water-based, nonsurface pretreatment solutions will be formulated. The developed primers will be used not only in aluminum alloys but also in titanium alloys and steels.

The success of this research will lead to the identification of nonchromate corrosion inhibitors for primers and the formulation of nonsurface pretreatrnent primers. The sol-gel-based nonsurface pretreatment primers for adhesive bonding are expected to possess many advantages over traditional primers. The primer advantages are that it is environmentally benign (no volatile organic compound and nonchromates) and easy to apply. Under present environmentally conscious conditions, many industries are willing to or are forced to adopt new, environmentally friendly primers. This is the essence for the commercialization of the proposed sol-gel-derived primers. The commercial applications cover aerospace, construction, transportation, chemical, and petrochemical industries.
