WASHINGTON -- Hamid Abdol Rashidian has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Portland, Ore., to one count of conspiring to violate U.S. export laws and regulations that restrict trade with Iran, Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement F. Amanda DeBusk announced today.
Rashidian and his co-defendant, Henry Joseph (Hank) Trojack, attempted to export impregnated alumina and parts for gas turbines to Iran through Dubai, UAE, between December 1995 and August 1996, while operating under the business name R&H International. As part of his guilty plea, Rashidian agreed to forfeit $10,000 to the United States. He will be sentenced on June 8, 1998. Earlier this year, a federal jury in Portland convicted Trojak of similar charges.
Both actions are the result of an investigation by Commerce’s San Jose Office of Export Enforcement, the U.S. Customs Service office in Portland and the United States Attorney’s office in Portland.
The Department of Commerce, through its Bureau of Export Administration, administers and enforces export controls for reasons of national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation and short supply. Criminal penalties, as well as administrative sanctions, can be imposed for violations of the Regulations.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
