WASHINGTON -- The Commerce Department today imposed a $16,000 civil penalty on Chemicals Export Company of Boston, Mass., for allegedly exporting sodium cyanide without obtaining the required validated export licenses, F. Amanda DeBusk, Commerce assistant secretary for Export Enforcement announced.
The Department alleged that on four separate occasions between January 6, 1994 and July 7, 1995, Chemicals Export Company exported the sodium cyanide from the United States to Peru, Venezuela and Guatemala, without the required authorization. The company neither confirmed nor denied the charges but agreed to pay the penalty. Commerce’s Office of Export Enforcement Boston field office investigated the case.
The Department of Commerce, through its Bureau of Export Administration, administers and enforces export controls for reasons of national security, foreign policy, nonproliferation and short supply. Criminal penalties, as well as administrative sanctions, can be imposed for violations of the Regulations.
In April of 2002 the Bureau of Export Administration (BXA) changed its name to the Bureau of Industry and Security(BIS). For historical purposes we have not changed the references to BXA in the legacy documents found in the Archived Press and Public Information.
