SURVEY OF BUSINESS OWNERS (SBO)
The SBO is a consolidation of two prior surveys, the Surveys of Minority- and Women-Owned
Business Enterprises (SMOBE/SWOBE), and includes questions from a survey discontinued in
1992 on Characteristics of Business Owners (CBO).
The SBO is part of the Economic Census, which is conducted every five years, for
years ending in "2" and "7."
Final estimates from the 2002 SBO covering businesses owned by American Indians and
Alaska Natives, Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders,
and Women were released in six individual PDF publications on August 29, 2006.
SBO data products also include three summary reports. The Company Summary
was released on September 14, 2006, and two additional 2002 SBO summary reports on
Characteristics of Businesses and Characteristics of Business Owners were released on
September 27, 2006. Links to these SBO reports can be found in the shaded
left column of this page.
2002 is the most recent year for which SBO data are available.
Types of Available Data
SBO statistics describe the characteristics of U.S. businesses by ownership category, i.e.,
by gender, Hispanic or Latino origin, and race of principal owners; by geographic area at the
national, state, and sub-state regional levels; by 2-digit industry sector based on the
2002 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS); and by size of firm (employment and receipts).
SBO data on businesses include the number of firms, sales and receipts, and annual payroll
for firms in each ownership and geographic category.
SBO statistics also describe the characteristics of business owners by gender, Hispanic or Latino origin, and
race at the national level by employment status and business interest.
Other SBO data, published in the Characteristics of Businesses and Characteristics of Business Owners reports,
identify family- and home-based businesses, types of customers and workers, sources and purposes
of financing, and owner's age, education level, veteran status, and primary function(s) in the
business.
For more information on the scope, coverage, and methodology for the 2002 SBO, access
SBO
Survey Methodology.
How to Access Published SBO Data

(full PDF or tables only PDF) by clicking on the link in the shaded left column of this page.
Summary statistics for changes in the number of businesses from 1997 to 2002, summaries of
findings, charts, and maps are available for most ownership groups by clicking on the
link in the shaded left column of this page.
Historical data from the 1992 CBO can be accessed from the links in the shaded left column of this page.
In addition, American FactFinder (AFF),the Census Bureau's online statistics reference
system, now provides quick access to the tools you need to search, filter, and download statistics
from the 2002 SBO data sets. (See SBO/CB/CBO on AFF.)
and 2002 Economic on American Fact Finder Introduction to AFF takes data users goes step-by-step through the use of Economic Census data. The SBO data are also available on DVD-ROM.
Visitors to the AFF Web site who have difficulty downloading data from AFF or who have questions about
tables and text in the various SBO reports should call the SBO staff at 888.225.4022 or 301.763.3316.
How to Obtain Special Tabulations
In addition to regular tabulations of data collected in the SBO survey and published in the SBO report
series, Census Bureau staff also prepare special tabulations based on these data. Such tabulations are
prepared on a cost basis, and their preparation depends on the availability of staff resources and time.
Data in these tabulations are summaries subject to the same rules prohibiting disclosure of confidential
company-specific information that govern regular Census Bureau publications.
Requests for special tabulation cost estimates, as well as exact specifications for the type and format
of the data requested, should be directed to the SBO staff by e-mail at
csd@census.gov or by phone at 888.225.4022
or 301.763.3316.
