Western U.S. Phosphate Project

Project status is complete. Please check the project list for currently active projects

DELIVERABLES:

Conduct research on the residence and behavior of selenium and associated trace elements in conditions ranging from the original depositional environment through current condition, mining and waste disposal, mobilization, transport, fate, and impact. Field studies are undertaken in selected watersheds representing a variety of circumstances including active mining, reclaimed waste dumps (such as the one implicated in the selenium poisoning incident), abandoned mines, unmined deposits, and non-mineralized areas.

Establish background/baseline geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data for the district in order to evaluate the long-term environmental and economic impacts of phosphate mining.

Update and complete geologic mapping and resource estimations within the district for areas not yet mined.

Utilize results of above research efforts to construct deposit and geoenvironmental models designed to 1) better understand and, where appropriate, help predict potential impacts of future mining and 2) identify optimal mining and reclamation strategies throughout the Western Phosphate Field.

Open File Reports of research work are issued regularly. Because raw data acquired during the project will require time to interpret, the data are released in open-file reports for prompt availability to other workers. Open-file reports associated with this series of resource and geoenvironmental studies are submitted to Federal and industry cooperators for comment; however, the USGS is solely responsible for the data contained in the reports.

Western US Phosphate Project Field Workshops were held in Soda Springs, Idaho in June 1998 and 1999. Approximately 25 participants attended the two-day workshop in 1998, visiting active phosphate mines and several outcrops in the SE Idaho Phosphate District. Fifty participants in the 1999 workshop heard one-half day of presentations on phosphate and USGS research activities followed by one and one-half days of field visits to research sites and relevant features. The USGS is a participant in the Selenium Working Group and the Selenium Advisory Committee. Several presentations on the research activities of USGS scientists were made to these groups by project staff from 1998 through 2000. A project science meeting for USGS staff and cooperators was held in February 2001.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS AND MAJOR PRODUCTS:

Project research should lead to a better understanding of the distribution and controls of phosphate mineralization in the Western Phosphate Field, as well as an understanding of the relationship of Selenium and other potentially toxic elements to the mineralization and the route by which these elements mobilize, concentrate, and become bioavailable. Such information will allow land management agencies, phosphate mining and processing companies, agriculture concerns and others to avoid or minimize negative environmental consequences. In addition, completion of the geologic mapping and resource estimation will assist the BLM with decisions related to phosphate valuation and leasing.
