Immigration Judge Takes Oath of Office

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Loreto S. Geisse was sworn in today as an Immigration Judge during an investiture ceremony at 2 p.m., at the San Francisco Immigration Court, Ceremonial Courtroom, 550 Kearny Street, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA. Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy, from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) in Falls Church, VA, administered the oath of office.
She joins the ranks of more than 200 Immigration Judges located in 53 Immigration Courts throughout the Nation. Immigration Judges are responsible for conducting formal administrative proceedings to determine whether foreign-born individuals who are charged with violations of federal immigration law should be removed from the United States or may be granted relief from removal. Immigration Judges decide each case independently and their decisions are final unless appealed or certified to the Board of Immigration Appeals. In the past year, Immigration Judges completed more than 250,000 such proceedings. They also are authorized to administer oaths of citizenship to candidates for naturalization.
Loreto S. Geisse was appointed as an Immigration Judge in June 2004. Prior to this appointment, Judge Geisse served as Counsel to the Chief Immigration Judge from September 2000 to June 2004. She received her undergraduate degree in 1989 from Washington University, and her Juris Doctorate in 1995 from Washington College of Law of the American University. From September 1997 to September 2000, Judge Geisse served as a trial attorney with the Department of Justice, Civil Division, Office of Immigration Litigation. She worked previously at EOIR as an attorney-advisor for the Chief Immigration Judge from September 1996 to September 1997. Judge Geisse first joined the Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honor Program with EOIR in 1995 serving as a judicial law clerk for the immigration courts in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and York, Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Maryland Bar.
