Attorney General Appoints New Deputy Director

FALLS CHURCH, VA -- Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) Director Kevin D. Rooney announced that Kevin A. Ohlson has been appointed by the Attorney General as EOIR’s Deputy Director, effective September 21, 2003.  Prior to his appointment, Mr. Ohlson had been acting in this capacity.  Before becoming Acting Deputy Director, Mr. Ohlson had served as a Board Member with the Board of Immigration Appeals since March 2001.

The Deputy Director reports to the Director as his principal assistant in overseeing all EOIR activities, including the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge, and the Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer.

Mr. Ohlson served on active duty with the U.S. Army as both a military lawyer and a paratrooper.  He then became a Federal prosecutor in 1989, but was called to active duty during Operation Desert Storm and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.  Mr. Ohlson returned to the Justice Department where he served in a variety of positions, including chief of staff to the Deputy Attorney General.  He received the Edmund J. Randolph Award for his service to the Department.

Mr. Ohlson attended Washington and Jefferson College on a four-year Army R.O.T.C. scholarship and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1982.  He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985.  Mr. Ohlson is a member of the Bar in both Virginia and the District of Columbia.
