This fact sheet outlines the role and responsibilities of individuals with disabilities during an emergency.

An emergency is an event that has the potential to be life threatening. Emergencies can range from severe weather to an act of terrorism.

Role:

    - Determine if assistance is needed during an emergency.

Responsibilities:

         Emergency Preparedness -
    - Assess your ability to function under extreme circumstances.
    - If assistance is needed during an emergency, inform your supervisor.
    - Be aware of exits, escape routes, and accessible paths out of the building.
    - If you need to work before or after core business hours, it is advisable to inform the building security so that they can locate and assist you in an emergency.
         During an Emergency -
    - Follow instructions provided by your supervisor, safety, and security personnel.
    - Inform safety personnel or colleagues if more assistance is needed.

What DOT Will NOT Do:

    - The DOT will not assume that all individuals with disabilities need assistance in an emergency.
    - The DOT cannot be expected to provide transportation for all individuals with disabilities during an emergency. It is recommended that the individuals with a disability make alternative transportation plans.
