ITS Standards: A Brief Stroll through the Different Document Types
ITS standards are developed and published by standards development organizations ( SDO) that use different terms to describe their standards documents. The purpose of this paper is to describe the document types that are collectively known as "Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Standards." The source of information for this document includes individual SDO manuals or Internet homepages.

ITS Standards Advisories
ITS Standards Advisories provide federal, state, and local ITS deployers with a snapshot of the standards used in ITS deployments, including information about development status, testing results, deployment guidance, and training and technical assistance.

ITS Standards Fact Sheets
ITS Standards Fact Sheets are concise, plain English descriptions of ITS standards. Fact Sheet can help you understand and deploy standards-based ITS.

NTCIP Guide
The purpose of this guide is to assist decision-makers, planners, specification writers, and implementers to understand the various NTCIP standards documents and how to use them, as well as the overall motivations behind the use of NTCIP. The latest version of the document is available from the NTCIP on-line library.

TMDD Guide
The purpose of the TMDD Guide is to assist decision makers and practitioners to generally understand the nature, role, and benefits of using the Traffic Management Information Standards. To do that the Guide has the following five specific purposes:

  • Provide a general awareness to decision makers and managers about the TMDD & MS/ETMCC Standards and serve as a basis for technology transfer and training,
  • Improve understanding to support better resource allocation decision-making,
  • Help identify requirements for new systems,
  • Give a context to system design, and
  • Develop insight for system implementation and operation.

Guide to the IEEE 1512® Family of Standards
This guide "covers such topics as the need for the standards, issues related to information sharing, table top exercises, and how to incorporate the standards into existing communication systems. It also includes implementation guidelines and case studies on the equipment, software and policy changes agencies have made to enhance interaction among 1512 standard users."

An Introduction to Standards for RWIS
This brochure describes three categories of standards being considered for RWIS applications: siting standards, calibration standards, and communication standards. Also in PDF.

Best Practices for Using Geographic Data in Transit: A Location Referencing Guidebook
This guidebook provides best practices for both transit managers and technical staff with respect to planning, implementing and using geographic data in transit. The Guidebook discusses issues and best practices for defining and using geographic locations of bus stops, routes and other map data that are needed for successfully implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as for obtaining operational efficiencies.

Specification Guide for Procurement of NTCIP-compliant DMS
This document provides guidance on how to procure dynamic message signs that are compliant with the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) standard. The guide contains an overview of the standard, an explanation of the need to include particular information when developing an NTCIP specification for dynamic message signs, a suggested outline for procurement specifications, and sample text for inclusion in the specifications.

ITS Standards Lessons Learned Reports

Identification and Documentation of Weather and Road Condition Dissemination Devices and Data Formats
The Aurora Program recently completed a study of display standards and calibration methods. The report is titled "Identification and Documentation of Weather and Road Condition Dissemination Devices and Data Formats" provides a comprehensive discussion on the state of the practice. The Aurora Program is an international RWIS (road/weather information systems) research consortium.

NTCIP Case study reports (1999-2004)
This series of documents describes the lessons learned by vendors, agencies, and consultants during a project that required compliance with the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP).

NTCIP 9010 - XML in ITS Center-to-Center Communications
"NTCIP 9010 provides an overview of the issues involved in using XML-based technologies for ITS. NTCIP 9010 was written for the technical transportation professional. The report includes an appendix, intended for technical users, with guidance on UML and XML development tools. NTCIP 9010 is not intended to be a tutorial on XML or XML-based standards, but rather to provide sufficient background to support the discussion leading to the development of an XML-based C2C standard, consistent with the NTCIP C2C Working Group's mission."

Dynamic Message Sign Standards Usage by State
This map depicts the use of Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) standards in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as of March 2005. A text listing is also available.

Lessons Learned during the Procurement, Installation and Testing of NTCIP Message Signs
A project of the Enterprise Program, INCH (Incorporating NTCIP-Compliant Hardware) aims to facilitate the ability of public agencies to specify, procure, install, and test NTCIP-compliant hardware. Results of the project are summarized in "Lessons Learned during the Procurement, Installation and Testing of NTCIP Message Signs."

NTOC Talks Newsletter
NTOC Talks is a newsletter of the National Transportation Operations Coalition. The newsletter is emailed twice a month and presents links to information and resources about ITS and Transportation Management and Operations (M&O).
