The Geotechnical Group of the Office of Engineering in cooperation with the Office of Technology Applications has been extensively involved in the promotion of mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSE). This effort has been made under Demonstration Project 82 (DP 82). To date, over 60 workshops and technical assistance visits have been made throughout the country to promote this worthwhile technology. As part of DP 82, considerable effort has been devoted to the development of a computer program to facilitate the design and analysis of MSE walls.

By this memorandum, we are announcing the availability the computer program MSEW 1.0 which has been developed by ADAMA Engineering Inc. The program follows the design guidelines from the DP 82 manual entitled "Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes Design and Construction Guidelines" (FHWA-SA-96-071). The manual and program are completely compatible with AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, sixteenth edition, 1996; as amended by the 1998 interim revisions. This program will be of interest to geotechnical and structural engineers involved in the design and analysis of mechanically stabilized earth walls. A detailed description of the program and its features is attached.

The MSEW 1.0 is copyrighted and password protected. Our offices are authorized by the developer to distribute the program to Federal Agencies and State departments of transportation. Complete details on obtaining the MSEW 1.0 program can be found in the attachment.

Please forward the above information to appropriate State offices. Other organizations and individuals interested in the program can contact ADAMA Engineering Inc., at (302) 368-3197 for additional information. General questions regarding the subject program may be directed to Mr. Chien-Tan Chang at 202 366-6749. Specific technical questions should be directed to Mr. Jerry DiMaggio at 202 366-1569. Program updates will be posted on the Geotechnical Section of the Bridge Division Web site (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/bridge/). Information on how to obtain the DP 82 manual is also available at this site.
