ARS scientists assist Alcorn State University on projects on development of an efficient system for production of meat-type pigs in southern United States and provide assistance with methods for improving and revitalizing hog farming in rural Mississippi. The project will help farmers to improve their breeding stock and offer farmers opportunities to market new feeder pigs through local farmer cooperatives. The program has offered ASU students ways for gaining practical experience in working with the environment, skills in cooperative formation, principles, practices, business management and operations which can be transferred to other areas of rural economic development and self-help efforts. |

The Eastern Regional Research Center has established a new worksite on the campus of Delaware State University with research projects on the microbiological safety of aquaculture products. The ARS will work collaboratively with the University's aquaculture program. The University currently has two faculty members engaged in aquaculture production research. The ARS research will focus on the development of analytical methods and processing strategies to improve the microbiological safety of aquaculture products. This program will be ARS's first intramural initiative on microbial food safety research involving aquaculture products and will encompass research on food borne viral and bacterial pathogens associated with molluscan shellfish. |

In a collaborative research effort between UMES and the Agricultural Research Service and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of USDA. The research is directed at the development of computer models that assist the poultry industry and FSIS in making critical food safety decisions that impact public health. Two types of computer models, predictive models and simulations, are being developed. Predictive models estimate changes in the numbers of human pathogens (Salmonella and Campylobacter) associated with poultry foods as a function of food composition and storage conditions. Simulation models assess the risk and public health impact of human pathogen infections from poultry products produced by different farm to table scenarios.
Data for development of models are the focus of the collaborative research effort in the Center of Excellence and involve laboratory studies with poultry foods and field studies in poultry operations. The models developed are available in the Poultry Food Risk Assessment Model for Human Pathogens or Poultry FARM-HP, a user friendly computer software application. Risk assessment is a critical component of the President's 1997 Food Safety Initiative. |

Florida A&M University (FAMU), Center for Biological Control. FAMU and ARS have joined with APHIS in developing the concept of a Biological Control Center and how to address the problems of the vegetable and small fruit industry, a high priority for both parties. ARS has assigned a biocontrol specialist to the FAMU campus to work on these crops in the Center, and is placing a second scientist to work on biocontrol of vegetable insects and another biocontrol specialist for research on aquatic weeds. |

ARS assists Tennessee State University in a cooperative research program designed to develop new and improved ornamental trees and shrubs for the U.S. Nursery industry. Breeding and genetics research, research on field and container production, and disease and insect control projects are included in this cooperation. ARS scientists help develop basic genetic and physiological information related to nursery crop species aimed at reducing pesticide use and fertilizer run off during nursery crop production. The ultimate goals are to develop new ornamental shrubs and trees with improved pest resistance, tolerance of environmental stress, and superior ornamental value, and to develop improved nursery crop propagation methods and production systems. |

The ARS Aquaculture Systems Research Unit works with the University scientists to: 1) evaluated and develop new and improved production strategies for intensive pond production of channel catfish that enhance profitability by increasing culture system stability, net yield, feed conversion efficiency, and survival; and 2) establish process parameters and determine sensory quality, acceptability and market potential of value-added products made from non-traditional fish species.
Research conducted by the ARS Unit incorporates a systems' approach (egg to plate) in solving problems that constrain fish farming in the U.S. Research is focused in two distinct areas: 1) developing improved culture systems that optimize profit potential for the intensive production of channel catfish; and 2) improving and developing postharvest procedures that enhance marketability of farm-raised fish, including development of value-added products from non-traditional fish. ARS scientists worked on research involving the effect of two initial diet sizes on growth of channel catfish stocked into ponds as single-size or mixed-size populations; the effect of alternative production management strategies on profitability of catfish farming; and, comparison of moist and dry cooking on sensory quality; consumer acceptance and marketability of a canned product made from the alternative aquaculture species, bighead carp. |
