ANTITRUST DIVISION NAMES NEW DEPUTY ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

Scott D. Hammond to Serve as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Criminal Enforcement

WASHINGTON D.C. — R. Hewitt Pate, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division, today announced that Scott D. Hammond has been appointed to serve as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Criminal Enforcement for the Division. Hammond replaces James M. Griffin, who retired from the Department in December 2004.

Hammond, who previously served as the Division's Director of Criminal Enforcement, will have supervisory authority over the Antitrust Division's domestic and international criminal antitrust investigations and prosecutions. As Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Criminal Enforcement, he will be responsible for reviewing all recommendations to open criminal investigations or bring criminal charges. He will also be responsible for reviewing all requests for amnesty under the Division's Corporate and Individual Leniency Policies.

"Cracking down on international criminal cartels is the Division's highest priority," said Pate. "In the last few years, the five longest jail sentences in the Division's history have been imposed, price fixers have paid stiff criminal fines for their illegal actions, and international cartels affecting more than $10 billion in U.S. commerce have been prosecuted. Scott has been a big part of the success of the criminal enforcement program and I know that success will continue under his leadership as Deputy Assistant Attorney General."

Hammond has served as the Director of Criminal Enforcement for the Division since 2000. Hammond joined the Division in 1988 through the Attorney General's Honors Program and began his career in the Litigation II section as a trial attorney, where he participated in a wide range of antitrust matters. In 1995, Hammond was selected as Senior Counsel to the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Criminal Enforcement, a position he held until becoming Director of Criminal Enforcement.

Hammond received both his B.S. in the Administration of Criminal Justice in 1985 and his J.D. in 1988 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Marc Siegel replaces Hammond as the Director of Criminal Enforcement for the Division. Since 2003, Siegel has served as Assistant Chief in the Division's San Francisco Field Office. He began his career with the Antitrust Division in 1986 as a trial attorney.
