Demographic

Dynamics of Poverty: 2001–2003 — May 15 — Using the monthly poverty data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation from 2001 to 2003, this report examines poverty using several different views. For instance, monthly data show that nearly one-third of people had at least one spell of poverty lasting two or more months during the three-year period. In keeping with results from previous research, these data demonstrate that chronic poverty (having income below the poverty threshold in every month of the period) is relatively uncommon, with 2.4 percent of the population living in poverty all 36 months of the period.
