American Community Survey
Group Quarters and Selected Population Profiles — On Sept. 27, the Census Bureau will release the third and final 2006 ACS data set, which will include workplace geography data and separate profiles for select race and ethnic groups, and, for the first time since 1990, profiles of the group-quarters populations (dormitories, prisons, nursing homes, etc.). Data cover geographies and groups with populations of 65,000 or more.
Demographic
Reasons People Do Not Work: 2004 — People 15 or older list reasons they had not worked at a paid job for at least the prior four consecutive months, according to the national Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Scheduled for release Sept. 17.)
Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2005 — This report shows national-level trends of child-support income received by parents for children whose other parent lives elsewhere. It also examines other types of support received for the children, such as health insurance and noncash assistance. (Scheduled for release Sept. 20.)
Health and Health Care of the Older Population in Urban and Rural China: 2000 — An examination of activity limitations, self-assessed health, chronic disease status and lifestyle behaviors of China’s older population. Also looks at the mental health and use of health care services by Chinese 60 and older. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-September.)
Home Equity Lines of Credit — Who Uses This Source of Credit? — This report profiles single-family homeowners who used home equity lines of credit in 2001 and compares them to their counterparts from 10 years earlier, including age, home value, mortgage, age of home, number of loans for home improvements and proportion of people using home equity for debt consolidation. Data are from the 2001 Residential Finance Survey. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late September.)
Marriage and Divorce: 2004 — How many trips down the aisle do people take? What’s the average lifespan of a first marriage? Find the answers and much more about marriage in these tables from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-September.)
Geographical Mobility: 2006 — These 34 tables highlight migration patterns and characteristics of movers in the United States, including how far people move, how often and why, among others. Data are from the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late September.)
Population of Hurricane-Affected Areas — The Census Bureau will issue population estimates and maps of areas that could be impacted by the next named storm or hurricane that threatens landfall on U.S. soil.
Profiles of Older Workers — The Census Bureau, in partnership with 31 states, has launched a series of reports on workers 55 and older. Vermont is the third state to be released in the series, followed by Indiana, Arkansas and Hawaii. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.)
Economic
2006 State and Local Government Employee-Retirement Systems — Annual data on revenues, expenditures, financial assets and membership for public employee retirement systems. Data are shown for individual retirement systems, as well as aggregately at the national, state and local levels. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late September.)
Facts for Features
Editor’s note: Facts for Features are customarily released about two months before an observance in order to accommodate magazine production timelines.
American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November) — Presidents have signed proclamations to honor the nation's approximately 4.5 million American Indian and Alaska Natives each year at this time. This group is younger and has larger families than the national population. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-September.)
Veterans Day (Nov. 11) — Parades and speeches across the country, as well as a national ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, highlight this federal holiday. Some of the statistics from this day include the number of veterans in the country (24.1 million), their racial and ethnic backgrounds (2.1 million are black), and the number who vote (17.4 million). (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-September.)
Thanksgiving Day: (Nov. 22) — Gobble, gobble! Economic and demographic statistics pertaining to the menu of culinary delights consumed on Turkey Day. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early October.)
