Demographic

35 Million People Live in Hurricane-Prone Areas — About 35 million people live in areas directly threatened by Atlantic hurricanes, stretching along the coastal areas from North Carolina to Texas. The Census Bureau has information and maps online that emergency planners will be able to use to gauge the needs in their area. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late June.)

Subcounty Population Estimates: July 1, 2006 — Last year, Phoenix appeared on the verge of becoming the nation’s fifth largest city. Find out if that happens when July 1, 2006, population estimates of the nation’s incorporated places — cities, towns, villages and boroughs — are released. (Scheduled for release June 28.)

International Database Update: 2007 — Internet files showing demographic indicators such as infant mortality, life expectancy, fertility rates, net migration, and population growth for all countries and areas of the world. Includes current estimates that project age and sex distribution to 2050. (Scheduled for release in late June.)

Economic

Nonemployer Statistics: 2005 — More than three in four businesses don’t have a payroll, and this annual update details the number of self-employed businesses by industry and provides estimates of their receipts. This complements County Business Patterns: 2005, last month’s report on businesses with paid employees. (Tentatively scheduled for release late June.)

Characteristics of Veteran-Owned Businesses: 2002 and Characteristics of Veteran Business Owners: 2002 — A look at military veterans who own businesses and their characteristics, such as age, race, educational attainment and disability. Statistics come from the Survey of Business Owners, which was part of the 2002 Economic Census. (Tentatively scheduled for release early July.)

Facts for Features

Labor Day (Sept. 3) — This day, which for many marks the end of summer, is a longtime federal holiday (since 1894) honoring our nation’s workers. The Census Bureau spotlights our nation’s work force through this array of data from our demographic subject area. Scheduled for release July 3.)

Grandparents Day (Sept. 9) — In observance of this day of storytelling and reflection, the Census Bureau tells the demographic story of these unsung role models and caregivers. (Tentatively scheduled for release early July.)

Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) — Sept. 15 marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua – and the starting point of this celebration of U.S. Latino culture and traditions. This fact sheet presents data from the Census Bureau’s demographic and economic subject areas pertaining to the nation’s Hispanic population. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-July.)

Unmarried and Single Americans Week (Sept. 16-22) — The third full week of September is dedicated to the nation’s singles. The Census Bureau presents statistics about this group from its demographic and economic subject areas. (Tentatively scheduled for release mid-July.)

Profile America and Al Dia (Spanish) for June/July — Upcoming segments include “Home Fix-Up” (June 29) and “Hot Dog Month” (July 12). American Community Survey

Release Schedule for 2006 American Community Service Data — June 21 — This year’s release marks the first time that group quarters (prisons, dorms, etc.) are included in ACS data products. Income and poverty data will be released Aug. 28, social characteristics will come Sept. 12 and population profiles Sept. 27.
