February 7, 2008: Funding Is Now Available for Clean Diesel Projects

For fiscal year 2008, Congress appropriated funds for the first time for the Diesel Emission Reduction Program under the Energy Policy Act (2005) to help reduce harmful emissions from heavy duty diesel engines. Through the National Clean Diesel Campaign, the Environmental Protection Agency will award grants to assist its eligible partners in building diesel emission reduction programs across the country that improve air quality and protect public health. For fiscal year 2008, $49.2 million is available.

December 13, 2007: Diesel Retrofit Technology Verification Workshop

EPA held a Retrofit Technology Verification Workshop on December 13, 2007 in Washington, DC. This workshop helped technology vendors, original equipment manufacturers, fuel and fuel additive makers, and other diesel engine technology organizations learn more about verifying retrofit technologies and gain an understanding of the available opportunities for verified technologies.

EPA has released new guidance and a fact sheet for quantifying and using emission reductions from retrofit of diesel vehicles, engines, and equipment. This guidance applies to both highway vehicles (such as buses and trucks) and nonroad vehicles, engines, and equipment (for example, construction equipment).

Established to promote diesel emission reductions, the campaign includes regulatory programs to address new diesel engines as well as non-regulatory programs that will address the millions of diesel engines that are already in use. The report showcases the positive impact the program has had on the reduction of particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and air toxics.
