WASHINGTON — The Washington Business Journal’s new list of 25 Minority Business Leaders features just one federal executive: Tony Reed, Regional Administrator of the U.S. General Service Administration’s (GSA) National Capital Region (NCR).

“I’m not surprised that Tony would receive this award,” said GSA Acting Administrator David Bibb. “Tony and our excellent NCR workforce have done an excellent job supporting the federal workforce, helping area small businesses, and maintaining hundreds of government-owned buildings and historic properties.”

Reed was applauded for his leadership of NCR’s 1700 employees, and a move aimed at increasing federal contracting opportunities for area small businesses.  One of his first initiatives was to help raise awareness of socioeconomic programs by realigning the region’s Small Business Utilization Center.  The small business center now has a voice in planning acquisition strategies, advocating for set-aside contracts, and helping minority firms by breaking out portions of large contracts. 

Reed oversees a real estate portfolio of 93 million square feet of space that includes more than 880 government–owned and leased facilities that house nearly 300,000 federal workers. He also partnered with Bowie State University on a project that helped students learn about the federal government’s procurement processes. 

The Journal considered leaders in industries ranging from engineering to event planning before announcing its list of minority business leaders at an April 11 luncheon at the Gaylord Convention Center at National Harbor.  More than 650 attended the event.
