IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 21, 2002 U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans capped off the Bush Administration's first business development mission to Mexico today with the announcement of a new business agreement. Mexico's Department of Transportation and Communication (SCT) and Connecticut-based PanAmSat are partnering to help expand broadband accessibility into even the most rural locations in Mexico. "Mexico is an important region and an expanding global market and they are ready to do business," said Evans. "That was clear to us throughout our visit here this week." Evans led 14 U.S. businesses – primarily small ones to Mexico to explore opportunities to expand exports in the information technology, telecommunications, energy, environmental, medical and manufacturing sectors. During the trip, Evans witnessed the signing of more than $1 million in Trade Development Agency grants for technical assistance and capacity-building for future growth in Mexico. Projects funded include feasibility studies for modernizing Puebla Airport, an inter-modal terminal network, and expansion of the Port of Veracruz. Evans and the business mission participants met with top Mexican government officials and business leaders in Mexico City and Monterrey, discussing potential opportunities for closer economic cooperation and partnerships. Evans also highlighted good corporate citizenship being practiced by U.S. companies doing business in Mexico. He visited a Mexico City elementary school built by the Ford Motor Company of Mexico, which has built more than 200 schools throughout Mexico. Evans also visited an orphanage supported by HEB Foods in Monterrey, which donates food from 19 of its Mexico grocery stores to help feed tens of thousands of children in orphanages, community lunch kitchens and schools. |
