IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, June 19, 2002 U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans led a U.S. business delegation on a tour of HEB Foods in Monterrey, Mexico. Evans praised HEB Foods of Kerrville, TX, for exemplifying good corporate citizenship to the people in Northern Mexico. The Texas-based company donates food from 19 of its Mexico grocery stores to help feed tens of thousands of children in orphanages, community lunch kitchens and schools. "American business is bringing with it to Mexico not only expanded economic opportunity and world-class products and services, but also the true American spirit of giving," Evans said. During the tour, Evans and Mayor of Santa Catarina Humberto Gonzalez Garibaldi helped unload a 3.5 ton truck of HEB donated foods for Hogar de la Misericordia, an orphanage for children with cerebral palsy. Hogar is one of the many orphanages that benefits from HEB donations. Evans told reporters after the tour, "Whether in the United States or abroad, U.S. companies, like HEB, exemplify standards, values and best practices that improve the quality of life and highlight the common goals we share to be healthy, secure and safe." Earlier today, Secretary Evans and the U.S. business delegation, met with Nuevo Leon Governor Fernando Canales and other top Mexico officials. During their meeting, the U.S. company leaders outlined their products and services and expressed their interest in developing new business partnerships in Monterrey and throughout Mexico. |
