Federal Partnership Yields Property for Ketchikan Native AmericansGSA #9387 February 21, 1997 WASHINGTON, DC--The Ketchikan Indian Corporation (KIC) of Alaska became first-time property owners last week thanks to the federal government. At a February 13 ceremony in Ketchikan, Alaska, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard to convey the former Marine Safety Detachment facility and .76 acres to the KIC to use as a clinic and social services facility. The conveyance resulted from legislation passed last year by Congress and signed by President Clinton on October 19, 1996 (P.L. 104-324). Stephanie Rainwater, KIC president, accepted and signed the property deed. She was joined by GSA's Northwest and Arctic Regional Administrator Jay Pearson; Capt. D.B. Peterman of the Coast Guard; Ketchikan Mayor Alaire Stanton, and Sherrie Slick, the town of Ketchikan's Congressional liaison. Slick read congratulatory letters from U.S. Sens. Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski, and U.S. Rep. Don Young. Following the signing was a Tribal celebration highlighting three traditional Native Dance Groups representing Tsimshian, Tlingit and Haida Clans. The ceremony closed with all the participants joining in the traditional "Raven Dance" with Tribal performers spanning three generations. Index of News Releases
