I would like to comment on the proposed audio signals for crosswalks. (I am
legally blind.) I think the technology would be useful and helpful. I do not
feel it should be mandated, however. I think clear, simple guidelines should be
established so that when they are implemented it is done so uniformly per a
standard. Criteria should be established that determines the usefulness of such
a device at a given intersection. If it warrants audio, it should be required.
But to require it at every place that visual "walk" / "don't walk" signals are
placed is excessive and bears an unjustified cost. Another reasonable plan would
be grandfather in most intersections but require it when visual signals are
repaired/replaced.
