GSA Web Site to Promote Recycling Scores on 'America Recycles Day'GSA #9988 November 15, 2002
"GSA supports President Bush in his efforts to establish effective, citizen-centric tools, for the environmental management of waste related to construction and demolition," said GSA Public Buildings Service (PBS) Commissioner F. Joseph Moravec. "According to some estimates, concrete, asphalt, drywall and other debris that is not biodegradable comprises up to half of what we bury in landfills." GSA's database, which includes almost 2,000 companies nationwide, is the first to include an all-in-one list of construction waste recyclers. "Public Buildings Service construction project managers heard contractors say they would like to recycle construction waste, but couldn't find people to haul it," Mr. Moravec said. "Our PBS associates thought about how they could help and found a solution by providing a database that will encourage construction waste recycling at industry as well as government construction sites. We hope PBS efforts will help reduce the number of landfills. In addition to its environmental benefits, the database also provides added value by expanding business opportunities for waste haulers." Available at http://cwm.gsa.gov, the database includes company names and contact information, along with the materials that haulers accept and their sorting criteria. It is searchable via city, state and other key words. GSA is a centralized federal procurement and property management agency created by Congress to improve government efficiency and help federal agencies better serve the public. GSA acquires, on behalf of federal agencies, office space, equipment, telecommunications, information technology, supplies and services. GSA comprises 14,000 associates and provides services and solutions for the office operations of more than one million federal workers in 8,300 government -owned and leased buildings in 1,600 U.S. communities.
