Veterans Day is a time to pause and honor all who serve and all who have served in the armed forces of our nation. From the icy winter at Valley Forge long ago to the modern-day courage of our men and women fighting for our freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq, our American way of life has been preserved, protected and defended for more than two centuries.

Each year, Veterans Day presents another opportunity for students to learn the history of America, and to appreciate the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. We all have the duty and privilege of teaching our children about the service and heroism of American veterans in defending our nation and preserving our cherished freedoms.

The U.S. Department of Education has online resources to help parents and teachers share the story of Veterans Day with children. The resources can be found at http://www.ed.gov/free. I hope all Americans will learn more about the significance of this national holiday and honor the service of our veterans.
