Secretary Gutierrez Statement on Cuba Independence Day

WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez released the following statement on the anniversary of Cuba’s Independence from Spain.

“Today, on the 106th anniversary of Cuba’s independence, we are reminded of the ideals of those brave Cubans who fought for freedom more than a century ago. Sadly, Cuba today bears little resemblance to those patriots’ dreams. Cuba currently holds more than 240 internationally-recognized political prisoners, while another more than 5,000 Cubans have been imprisoned by the regime for the vague offense of ‘dangerousness.’ These courageous Cubans have been unjustly deprived of liberty, held in inhuman conditions, and denied basic medical care merely because they wish to have a say in the future for their country.

“During this time of year, when the champions of democracy and human rights on the island traditionally seek to have their voices heard, it is important that they know that the international community stands in solidarity with them. We must ensure that those who put their own safety as risk to call for real democratic change in Cuba know that free people everywhere share their aspirations for a free Cuba.

“Tomorrow, May 21, citizens of the world will celebrate Cuba Solidarity Day with a hopeful spirit for the day when Cuba can celebrate future independence days in a democratic country with jails emptied of political prisoners.”

Secretary Gutierrez co-chairs with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, a U.S. Cabinet-level commission formed to explore ways the United States can help hasten and ease a democratic transition in Cuba.
