Volunteer as an Intern with the USGS Education and Communications Program!

The Education-Communications program needs individuals on an ongoing basis to help carry out its mission of communicating science, geography, and geospatial technology to the general public, educators, legislators, news media, government officials, nonprofit organizations, and industry.  While the positions are unpaid, typically, volunteers receive internship credit through their host university or secondary school.  Duties may be performed at the Denver Federal Center, off site at an academic institution, at a a library, or in the volunteer's home.  For a summary of the activities that this program has been involved in, see http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/outreach/success.html.  Duties include but are not limited to the following list of 20:

(1)        Catalog digital demonstrations and write CDs for education digital library.

(2)        Compile digital demonstrations for conferences and presentations using ArcGIS, ArcView, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other GIS, remote sensing, and presentation software.

(3)        Load and test GIS software and tools for USGS applications.

(4)        Construct new and extend existing digital applications in ArcGIS, ArcView, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and Image Analyst software.

(6)        Catalog and organize education library.

(7)        Develop and maintain web-based resources for the USGS.

(8)        Advise and assist USGS staff on standards-based curriculum development.

(9)        Review USGS educational resources and make them adhere to national geography and science content standards.

(10)      Review educational CD-ROMs from USGS and other organizations.

(11)      Develop fact sheets, journal articles, flyers, and posters.

(12)      Develop and maintain educational contacts databases.

(13)      Staff USGS exhibit booths at educational and technical conferences, including those in geography, science, GIS, remote sensing, and other topics.

(14)      Assist in gathering and preparing materials for workshops and conferences.

(15)      Assist in conducting workshops and in-house USGS tours.

(16)      Assist in helping set up USGS displays at Denver International Airport, in the USGS visitors center, in libraries, in other locations, and advise USGS staff on other ways and venues to showcase its science applications.

(17)      Create GIS-based lessons on minerals, weather, landforms, watersheds, floods, earthquakes, population, business, and other topics.

(18)      Create guidelines for using USGS spatial data in a variety of GIS software.

(19)      Create lessons and guidelines that use USGS maps, digital data, CDs, posters, and books.

(20)      Review and proofread articles for journals, web resources, guidelines, and other documents for data users .
