Our mission is to ensure the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. To achieve that, we develop and enforce reliability standards; assess reliability annually via 10-year and seasonal forecasts; monitor the bulk power system; evaluate users, owners, and operators for preparedness; and educate, train, and certify industry personnel. NERC is a self-regulatory organization, subject to oversight by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and governmental authorities in Canada.

NERC CEO Addresses Grid Coalition: The Future of Reliability; An Unprecedented Opportunity • November 21, 2008

"I believe we have an unprecedented opportunity ahead of us to improve grid reliability, reduce carbon emissions, and pursue energy independence at the same time. Climate change and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives were ranked this year as the number one emerging issue facing reliability over the coming years. As momentum on these initiatives increases at both provincial and federal levels, we see the potential to drive smart grid technologies, bring new generation technologies to market, and enable consumers to participate. In order to turn these goals into a reality, however, reliability must be actively considered as these initiatives progress. Indeed I see no path to a low carbon, energy independent, North America that does not travel down transmission wires."
