DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Subtropical Insects Research Unit, U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory at Ft. Pierce, Florida, seeks a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral position in Insect Chemical Ecology. The research program is dedicated to identifying semiochemicals of potential importance for management of economically important insect pests and vectors of plant disease such as the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri. The principal objective is to isolate repellent plant compounds from guava leaves and/or fruit for use against the Asian citrus psyllid. Additional topics will include the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella, and the Diaprepes root weevil Diaprepes abbreviatus. The research will identify active compounds of plant or insect origin through use of gas chromatograph-coupled electroantennograms, GC-MS, behavioral assays, wind tunnels and olfactometer devices.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Enotmology, Biochemistry, Ecology or Insect Beahvior or a related field is required. Experience with GC, GC-coupled electroantennogram, EAG, GC-MS and/or single-cell recording preferred.
