ANNOUNCEMENT NO:

RA-09-008H

POSITION:

Research Physical Scientist (Remote Sensing)

LOCATION:

Las Cruces, New Mexico

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  The position is located at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The incumbent will develop remote sensing methods to monitor landscape scale rangeland processes in the arid Southwest.  Specific objectives are to: 1) develop an object-oriented approach to extract biophysical and ecological metrics from multiple remote sensing sensors and platforms; 2) determine the type of remote sensing information that is translated across spatial scales, thereby enhancing our understanding of the scaling behavior of landscape characteristics; 3) specify linkages between on-the-ground protocols for phenological monitoring and remote sensing capabilities; and 4) evaluate the applicability of remote sensing results obtained in this study at JER to other long-term ecological sites in the Southwest.  These results will be employed to assess remote sensing applications to rangeland and ecological system management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D in fields related to natural resources, remote sensing, ecology, rangelands, hydrology, biophysics, or related environmental field.  Desired skills are knowledge of integration of vegetation and landscape variables; skills in use of computer information technologies and high-end software tools; knowledge of scientific principles of natural resources management; and analysis techniques for a wide range of remote sensing data are highly desired.
