DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position is located in the Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics, and Physiology Laboratory in Baton Rouge, LA. The incumbent will join a team of scientists that are working towards a Unit mission of genetic improvement of honey bee stocks. The incumbent will participate in research with the goal of characterizing the expression of genes that confer resistance to nosema, improvement of longevity, and reduction of stress associated with migratory beekeeping. This information will be utilized for genetic improvement of disease resistance and stress tolerance in honey bees.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a closely related field is required. Basic knowledge of molecular biology techniques (DNA isolation, PCR amplification, etc.) is required. Knowledge of microarray technology, real-time PCR, microbial culturing techniques, and a willingness to work with honey bees are desirable.
