DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  The position is located at Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Athens, GA.  The incumbent will use reverse genetics to evaluate the roles of different avian influenza virus (AIV) genes in the transmissibility of AIV to chickens.  Methods will include gene cloning, gene sequencing, cell culture and pathogenesis studies.  The incumbent will use existing pathogenesis data and gene sequence data to generate hypotheses on the role of specific genes in influenza transmissibility and pathogenesis in poultry.  Work with infected animals and cells will be performed in our Bio Safety Level -2/3 biocontainment facility.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Virology, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics or a related field is required.  A strong background in general molecular genetic techniques including PCR and gene cloning is necessary.  Experience in cell culture and  sequence analysis will be required.  Experience in animal models is desirable.
