POSITION:

Research Soil Scientist/Microbiologist/Agricultural or Environment Engineer

LOCATION:

Florence, SC

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  The position is located in the Coastal Plains Soil, Water and Plant Research Center in Florence, South Carolina.  The research is part of the Manures and Byproducts Utilization National Program (206) and Water Quality National Program (201).  The incumbent is part of a research team and will work collaboratively with other federal agencies, universities, and private companies.  The incumbent conducts research on both mechanical and ecologically engineered wetland systems with focus on nutrient cycling and bioenergy.  Objectives are to increase the understanding and function of nitrogen and phosphorus cycling as well as bioenergy production which includes 1)development of improved understanding of denitrification mass balance in livestock lagoons and wetland systems 2)measurement and assessment of nitrous oxide and methane from wetland systems and riparian buffers and 3)improvement of methane production from anaerobic digestion of livestock manures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D in soil science, microbiology, agricultural or environmental engineering, or a closely related field is required.  Work requires knowledge of water quality, waste management and treatment, nitrogen cycling, phosphorus chemistry, microbiology, and wetland biogeochemistry.  Must have experience with gas chromatography. Knowledge of a range of analytical equipment for measuring gas/nitrogen emissions is desirable.
