WASHINGTON, Oct. 13, 2005 - USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) today announced that it has
added an additional USDA Food Safety Mobile to supplement ongoing hurricane relief activities along the
U.S. Gulf Coast. The Food Safety Mobile II will help to reach hurricane victims in Texas and Louisiana
with vital food safety information and products, while the original Food Safety Mobile will continue its
outreach mission in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Like the original Mobile, the Food Safety Mobile II will provide free cleaning products, such as hand
sanitizers, bleach, and other products, as well as educational materials, such as recommendations for
removing odors from freezers and refrigerators due to spoilage.
"The Food Safety Mobile is providing hurricane victims with advice and recommendations on preventing
foodborne illness as a result of bacteria that often multiply after power outages and floods," said
USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Richard Raymond. "We are hopeful that by doubling our ability
to deliver this information directly to consumers, we will help to prevent even more cases of foodborne
illness."
The Mobile campaign is designed to educate as many people as possible about the unique and specific food
safety challenges faced by residents along the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of the hurricanes. Since its
deployment to hurricane-affected areas on September 18, the Food Safety Mobile has reached approximately
1,200 consumers at each of its designated stops.
Sponsored by FSIS, the Food Safety Mobiles are 35-foot recreational-style vehicles that provide food safety
information at the grassroots level. FSIS is the public health regulatory agency that inspects meat, poultry
and egg products for safety and wholesomeness. Over the past two years, the original Mobile has been to all
48 contiguous U.S. states teaching people how to protect themselves and their families from foodborne bacteria.
This is the first time it has been deployed in emerging relief efforts.
