This report presents initiatives to improve the quality of safety data programs throughout the U.S. Department of Transportation. The benchmark for such an undertaking comes from the National Institutes of Health, which routinely uses sophisticated models to sort out the contributing risk factors in disease. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) aims to treat transportation fatalities and injuries as a public health problem and build new models that more appropriately take account of interactions between risk factors (e.g., driver age, driver fatigue, and time of day).
