UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending April 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 2 was 2,664,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,686,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,655,500,
an increase of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,651,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 337,960 in the week ending April 9, an increase of 43,275 from the previous week. There were 350,739 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the
week ending April 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number
for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,818,036, a decrease
of 141,460 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent
and the volume was 3,112,845. Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March 26. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 908 in the week ending April 2, a decrease of 39 from the prior week. There were 1,974 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 119 from the preceding week. There were 15,507 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 26, a decrease of 916 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,792, an increase of 557 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 26 were in Alaska (5.7 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Michigan (4.1), Pennsylvania (3.9), Wisconsin (3.7), New Jersey (3.4), Massachusetts (3.3), Oregon (3.3), Rhode Island (3.3), Connecticut (3.0), Idaho (3.0), Illinois (3.0), and Vermont (3.0). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 2 were in New Jersey (+5,922), New York (+2,264), Puerto Rico (+1,467), Alabama (+1,213), and Connecticut (+1,106), while the largest decreases were in California (-8,535), North Carolina (-2,474), Kansas (-925), New Mexico (-553), and Virginia (-482).
