UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Oct. 9, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 9 was 2,798,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,806,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,831,500,
a decrease of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,851,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 278,662 in the week ending Oct. 16, a decrease of 59,661 from the previous week. There were 328,572 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the
week ending Oct. 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number
for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,300,163, a decrease
of 20,224 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent
and the volume was 2,890,257.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 2. 961 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Oct. 2. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,443 in the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 943 from the prior week. There were 2,334 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 95 from the preceding week. There were 17,531 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 2, an increase of 1,062 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,684, an increase of 554 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 2 were in Puerto Rico (4.1 percent), Alaska (3.6), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Oregon (2.5), California (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), Michigan (2.2), Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), Connecticut (2.1), Illinois (2.1), and Rhode Island (2.1). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 9 were in Michigan (+6,205), Pennsylvania (+4,601), Texas (+4,525), New York (+3,291), and California (+3,190), while the largest decreases were in Alabama (-1,684), Alaska (-30), and Puerto Rico (-30).
