UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Dec. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 392,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 385,000. The 4-week moving average was 413,250, a decrease of 25,250 from the previous week's revised average of 438,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending Dec. 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 15 was 3,700,000,
an increase of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of
3,677,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,660,500, a decrease of 71,750
from the preceding week's revised average of 3,732,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 504,604 in the week ending Dec. 22, an increase of 63,879 from the previous week. There were 484,258 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending Dec. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,766,848, an increase of 104,777 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,356,340. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 8. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,469 in the week ending Dec. 15, a decrease of 499 from the prior week. There were 1,146 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 130 from the preceding week. There were 19,125 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 8, a decrease of 1,084 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,079, an increase of 598 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 8 were in Alaska (5.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.2), Oregon (4.8), Washington (4.6), Nevada (4.1), Idaho (4.0), California (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.8), Arkansas (3.6), and Massachusetts (3.6). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 15 were in Virginia (+644), Nebraska (+564), Massachusetts (+307), Michigan (+136), and Rhode Island (+112), while the largest decreases were in California (-7,215), Tennessee (-4,302), Pennsylvania (-4,044), Texas (-3,483), and South Carolina (-3,234).
