U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces
Nearly $13.4 Million Grant to Aid Ongoing Hurricane Relief Efforts in
Mississippi
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a nearly $13.4 million grant to Mississippi to provide temporary jobs
and employment-related assistance to approximately 2,970 workers affected by
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
"Many Gulf Coast residents impacted by hurricane devastation are still
struggling to find work and rebuild their lives," said Secretary Chao. "This
$13.4 million grant will fund temporary jobs, skills training and job placement
assistance to help thousands of Mississippians support their families and move
forward with new careers."
The $13,359,354 grant, awarded to the Mississippi Department of
Employment Security, will provide temporary jobs, public sector employment, and
employment-related assistance that may include assessment, individual
counseling, career planning, employment development and occupational skills
training. Additional services may include relocation assistance, out-of-area
job search assistance and other supportive services.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund
and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For
