June 15, 2000 (The Editor’s Desk is updated each business day.) CPI up 0.1 percent in MayOn a seasonally adjusted basis, the CPI-U rose 0.1 percent in May after registering no change in April. For the 12-month period ended in May, the unadjusted CPI-U increased 3.2 percent. The food index, which rose 0.1 percent in April, advanced 0.5 percent in May, its largest monthly increase since a 0.6 percent rise in October 1998. The index for food at home, which was unchanged in April, increased 0.7 percent in May with each of the major food at home groups except dairy products contributing. In May, the energy index declined 1.9 percent, the same as in April. The index for petroleum- based energy fell 3.4 percent in May, and the index for energy services declined 0.1 percent. Excluding food and energy, the CPI-U rose 0.2 percent in May, the same as in April.
