The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system for classifying business activity by industry.
Most of the principal economic indicators reported by the US Census Bureau have been reported on an SIC basis, and most were converted to a NAICS basis during 2001. As part of this conversion, we produced revised time series estimates back to 1992. The revisions are based on benchmarks derived from the 1997 Economic Census and the Bridge Between NAICS and SIC.
The following table provides links to these indicators, to the revised time series, and to explanations of how these changes were accomplished. These materials will help you understand the changes and how they affect the historic time series you use.
Other Census Bureau economic programs and US Federal agencies also have converted to NAICS.

NAICS was first used to classify data published by industry in the 1997 Economic Census. The Bridge Between NAICS and SIC shows the relationships between NAICS and SIC categories in detail and can be a helpful tool in understanding how NAICS affects time series.
