Best Workplaces for Commuters

NOTICE: NEW WEB SITE

On October 1, 2007, the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) assumed program management responsibilities for the Best Workplaces for Commuters Exiting EPA program.

BWC New Web siteThe Best Workplaces for Commuters program was first established in 2001 by EPA and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to promote innovative solutions to commuting challenges faced by employers and employees. The program provided the tools, guidance, and promotional opportunities necessary to help U.S. employers of any size incorporate commuter benefits into their standard benefits plan, reap financial benefits, and gain national recognition. Participating companies earned the designation "Best Workplaces for CommuterSM"—a mark of excellence for environmentally—and employee-friendly organizations.

Through partnerships with public and private sector employers, Best Workplaces for Commuters demonstrated that alternatives to drive-alone commuting such as transit, carpools, and teleworking are economically beneficial, yielding value to workers, employers, and our environment. EPA also partnered with transportation management organizations, transit providers, and local governments around the country to expand the reach of Best Workplaces for Commuters. From 2002 through 2006, more than 15 communities around the country released at least one Best Workplaces for Commuters list.

CUTR brings new energy to the program but will continue to promote the nationally-recognized Best Workplaces for CommuterSM brand and maintain the National Standard of Excellence. Because of its extensive experience in transportation demand management, CUTR is well-positioned to effectively carry out the Best Workplaces for Commuters message and mission.

CUTR plans to continue to implement many of the activities for which Best Workplaces for Commuters is known—including the Race to Excellence and the FORTUNE 500 List release. In addition, many communities across the country will continue to promote the program locally and recognize employers through metro area list releases. All of the tools, resources, and promotional materials that Best Workplaces for CommutersSM employers and Network members have relied upon in the past are still available from the BWC Web site now maintained by CUTR at bestworkplaces.org.
