2001 Proposed Federal Hazmat Transportation Law

On October 10, 2001, the Secretary of Transportation sent to Congress proposed legislation to reauthorize the Department of Transportation’s hazardous materials transportation safety program. The proposed bill would also enhance the Department’s inspection and enforcement authority, and make other needed amendments to achieve maximum safety in the transportation of hazardous materials in the 21st century. To accomplish these goals, the proposed bill contains suggested changes to the Federal hazardous materials transportation law, 49 U.S.C. 5101-5127. Following are copies of the proposed bill and section-by-section analysis of it, and a red-line/strike-out version comparing it to existing law.
