Statement by U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao on
2004 Workplace Injury and Illness Rates
WASHINGTON — The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in the private industry declined in 2004. The report revealed a statistically significant decline in the rate from the previous year — 4.8 cases per 100 workers in 2004, compared to 5.0 cases in 2003.
“The improved health and safety data released today once again demonstrate the effectiveness of the department's three-pronged approach to protecting workers: 1) compliance assistance to employers, 2) health and safety partnerships with labor, and 3) targeted, aggressive enforcement against bad actors.”
